Introducing the world of Kuchipudi to young dancers. Ages 4+
Lotus Buds introduces young dancers to the vibrant art of Kuchipudi. Classes begin with a traditional greeting (pranam) and flow into a fun, energetic warm up with yoga stretches. Children then learn the basics of Kuchipudi, including foundational steps, expressive hand gestures, and rhythmic patterns. Students are engaged with various other lessons including storytelling, and creative activities like coloring or drawing, ending with a cherished story time from our guru, Anila Kumari. LOTUS BLOSSOMS

Saturdays & Sundays
10:00 a.m.–11:30 a.m.
Once dancers have trained in Kuchipudi for a number of years, they are affectionately named Lotus Blossoms, and continue training towards a lifetime of movement. Kuchipudi is a highly rhythmic and expressive form that trains dancers to embody a full range of speed, with up to some of the fastest choreographies of any Indian dance tradition. At Sutradhar, dancers learn both nritta (abstract movement) and abhinaya (expressive storytelling), and are prepared to celebrate art and community both on and off the stage. Each class includes a traditional opening (pranam) as dancers greet the space, then adavus or rhythmic drills, and then new lessons in repertoire and original choreography. Dancers are trained in the original technique of storytelling passed down from the Bhagavatullu theater era, through which the mimetic map of hand gestures, metaphors, and the inner recesses of the heart are explored in the studio space. Please see our enroll page for more information.
IN PURSUIT OF
THE GODDESS

Thursdays

The heart of Indian dance philosophy is ageless, genderless, and beyond physical limitations. Sutradhar offers a unique course for adults which includes an exploration of inner divinity through Kuchipudi, yoga, and poetry. The class explores various goddesses and their symbolism expressed in poem, myth, and philosophy, and tailors movement goals to the students’ needs. Our Goddess students have agency and powerful focus in their own movement journey. Each class includes a yoga warmup, adavus (Kuchipudi exercises), hand gesture expressive work, and active discussion among the group. For enrollment, please see our enroll page for more information.
